Set Up
The system comes with a quick start guide and my husband had the basic system setup for Don in under 30 minutes. A second, more detailed user manual is also included that explains everything the Careline system can do and how to program it’s advanced features. The VTech writers clearly understand that many people often become frustrated with confusing geek speak and put together both manuals using illustrations and instructions written in a clear, easy to understand manner.
The telephone base is attractive, solidly built and can be plugged into any phone jack. The base buttons are large, easy to see and touch. The unit offers programmable 4 button speed dial, voice caller ID which announces who is calling and an audio assist system that enhances clarity and volume of the callers voice, a benefit for users who may have hearing limitations. The “Soft Button” menu screen allows the user to check the call log and set up the functions etc. The instructions were clear and advanced feature set up was simple to navigate.

The remote handset is also feature rich, Voice Alert caller ID, audio assist, visual ring alert, speaker and volume controls and a menu screen which allows you to check your call log and voice messages. The sound quality is very good on the handset and the speakerphone option allows you to enjoy hands free calls with crisp, clear sound. Don keeps the handset next to him on his recliner as he watches TV.
Relaxing securely with VTech Safety Pendant
The wearable Safety pendant is the star of the show, it’s equipped with two buttons that when pressed will dial either speed dial one or two on the base. Additionally you can use voice command on the pendant to dial all four-speed buttons you’ve programmed on the base. The voice command system is quite impressive, simply speak the commands the system is programmed for and voice command performs the function you’ve requested, no need for frustrating, time consuming “voice training”. You can also program the pendant to alert you when you’ve got an appointment or need to take medication, access time and date, voice messages and call logs. Don has an acre lot around his house that he navigates using a scooter and appreciates that he can clip the pendant on his belt or wear it on a soft cord around his neck. The Safety Pendant also has impressive range and he was able to use the device reliably from anywhere on his property.

Summing it all up
The VTech CareLine™ home telephone and personal communication system is great technology! A well constructed, good looking, feature rich phone system at a surprisingly attractive price. The system provides users with the ability to control how they wish to communicate conveniently & the ability to summon help in an emergency without paying monthly a monthly fee. My husband and I are grateful to know that Don can enjoy his home, spend time out in his yard, lounge near his pool and BBQ to his heart’s content while being able to quickly and easily summon help if he should need assistance.

What a great product! Anything that makes independent living safer is a good thing. That it doesn’t require a subscription fee makes it truly accessible for those on limited incomes.

Wonderful writeup about a great gadget that makes me sleep better at night knowing my dad has it. He had a stroke in 2000, and today at 85 he is more frail. Mom is there with him, but when she goes out, we’re happy he has this piece of technology (which took us awhile to convince him he HAD to have it!) with him in case of an emergency. It IS a godsend. I hope others will read your review and my comment and purchase the VTech Careline.

Sounds very feature rich indeed. The range and voice features seem particularly impressive. Definitely something to keep in mind for elder friends or those living alone with certain mobility challenges.
What a great idea. People want to stay independent as long as they can, but we who are entrusted to look after them want them to stay safe. This looks like a terrific answer to meet both of those needs.

Hello there, Shopping Queen! Thought I would let you know I have one of these CareLine Telephone Systems and all three phones are great. Each one functions as a real phone and yet, there are no additional fees once the System is purchased. VTech is a reliable company and I am grateful for this product. Glad to see it featured on-line.
