Disclaimer: As a Verizon Insider Ambassador I receive certain benefits, phone provided c/o of BlackBerry
As a Verizon Insider ambassador I was recently treated to a pretty awesome trip to NYC where I got to view a dizzying array of new products and the generous folks at BlackBerry presented us with the new Verizon 4G LTE BlackBerry Z10 . As most of you know I’m a fan of the bigger screen Android phones and I have to admit that I was concerned about how useable a device with a 4.2 inch screen could be. I am pleased to tell you that my first taste of Blackberry left me pretty impressed and it thrilled my husband who has claimed this phone for his own. Here’s a rundown of setup and our initial impressions of this tasty offering.
The Z10 has a sleek look with very few physical buttons, the phone back has a textured finish that lets you get a good grip on the device one handed. We were happy that the back is easily removable, the battery replaceable and storage expandable. (up to 32GB Micro SD card). The screen is a bright, clear 4.2 inches and is slightly recessed into the body of the phone. The screen is not gorilla glass so we picked up a case right away.
My husband was able to painlessly setup a BlackBerry ID and the subsequent screens walked him through setting up his email and Facebook accounts. He was also able to access tutorials teaching him how to use gestures and other features of the phone. Being able to just tap the Setup icon at any time to review the video tutorials again was quite useful.
There are very few physical buttons on this phone and the Z10 user Interface (UI) is heavily gesture dependent. In just a couple of hours we were both swiping away like pros.
The soft keyboard on the Blackberry Z10 is pure genius, instead of popping up in your field of text, auto-complete suggested words appear on the keyboard itself, a quick flick upwards and the word is added to whatever you are typing complete with a space. Misspell a word? the correct spelling will appear on the keyboard space bar, press and the correct spelling is inserted.
I’ve used every browser on the market and have to give to BlackBerry on this one, the browser is snappy! Coupled with Verizon 4G LTE surfing the web is a true joy, Pages load lightening quick! Zooming and scrolling functions are responsive and smooth. If you visit sites that still use Adobe flash you can enable flash capability easily right from within the browser settings. You can even tap a “share” button and send a link to a site you like via email or post it to your favorite social media platforms.
What about Apps?
The Z10 is in it’s infancy and BlackBerry World doesn’t yet have the quantity of apps offered by ios or android. The good news is that this device has strong support from BlackBerry and developers are quickly adding new applications. My husband does not yet have specific requirements above email and Facebook and felt there were plenty of apps to get him started.
Summing it up
The BlackBerry Z10 is a solidly built phone with a lovely screen and many compelling features. The keyboard and browser alone make this phone well worth owning, add in BlackBerry’s determination to make the end user’s experience easy and elegant and you might decide you too crave a taste of BlackBerry.
Next in the series I’ll be covering the BlackBerry Hub, camera features and BlackBerry Remember.
