Just a PC eating an Apple | Musings on MacBook Air

by Jean Parks on 01/25/2012

I’m a PC eating an Apple here since I got a new MacBook Air for Christmas, I’ve spent quite a bit of time playing with the Air and figured it was time to update you all on my trip into the Apple OS X experience

Things I love

A solid state system means quiet, I’ve heard the fan on this thing exactly once and that was under a heavy load.

OS X is economical with system resources, 4gb of memory with OS X Lion = 15  Firefox tabs, several apps & itunes blasting all without lag

System Weight under 3 pounds – I put this notebook into a slender messenger bag & keep nervously checking to make sure it’s still there, it’s seriously that light!

Styling- Even the harshest Apple critic must agree that the MacBook Air with it’s aluminum Unibody design is an elegant, solidly built computer.

The backlit keyboard – I don’t know how I ever functioned without it! if you work at night or in low light conditions frequently this is a must. Some reviewers note some shallowness of the keyboard but I’m not having issues with it

The Mac App store – If I ever need to do a full system restore I’ll be able to log into the app store & quickly reinstall all my programs, no need to save cd’s or hunt down licenses or keys for my software.

Things I’m not Loving

Quite simply this, the existing blogging apps for Mac pale in comparison to Windows Live Writer, I’ve been playing with Marsedit & Ecto and am finding them really frustrating to use. Being able to import, edit & watermark my pictures, being able to quickly & easily add links to my posts are things I’m really missing. I don’t know about the rest of you but wrestling with editing HTML at 2 am makes me want to beat my head into the desk. In desperation,  I’ve been logging into my desktop remotely to use Win Live just to get some posts up here!.

The Fix

Aside from praying that Microsoft releases a version of Win Live essentials for the Mac, I will most likely upgrade the 128 gb SSD drive in this computer so that I have enough extra space to  install Win7 via Bootcamp when I need to do some serious writing. I love this computer but am not loving how cumbersome blogging is without Win Live.
