Arcana Soaps is run by the massively talented Julia ,this review will focus on items from her Halloween 2010 Limited edition collection.
After carefully reading the scent descriptions I decided upon 2 LE perfume oils & 2 matching soaps, lol the Morphine oil just fell into my shopping cart somehow. Due to these being limited edition I placed 2 orders, getting the oils from the SoapBox Company and the soaps from buy olympia .
Dia de los Muertos Perfume Oil
scent descriptions provided by Arcana
Dia de los Muertos (Limited Edition): Though Spanish conquistadores tried to put the kibosh on this Aztec ritual for the dead, the holiday not only endured but retained its flamingly pagan core. Celebrate, honor, and even laugh at death with our fusion of spices, honey, tobacco, and dark chocolate.
Chocolate scents are hard to do well, throwing in honey and tobacco notes is something only a master perfumer can pull off. Julia shows scent junkies her chops with this blend! Don’t let the ingredient list fool you, this is no cloying, overly sweet foody type scent! This is an adult perfume, drop dead sexy, the chocolate note is present, deep, dark seductive, pulling you closer and closer, the honey note throws a bit of wild richness into the mix, the spices add mystery, the tobacco note in this blend binds and subdues chocolate and honey taming them, pulling all notes together resulting in a perfume that made me want to pull up my hair, unbutton an extra blouse button, speak in a husky voice and trot thru the crisp fall air to my favorite jazz club. Ladies, this is Original Sin in a bottle!
Holy Terror Perfume Oil
Holy Terror Perfume Oil (Limited Edition): There are utterly somber and fearsome spirits which are known to haunt certain long-deserted chapels, monasteries and abbeys. An unsettling, austere blend of burning frankincense, sandalwood, deep myrrh, and dusty beeswax candles.
This scent blend is indeed sober, austere but it also holds a spicy, deep, meditative quality to it, a pleasurable depth that I really like! Holy Terror is NOT a hippie head shop sort of blend, I get a different impression each time I sniff or apply this oil. I suspect that since this is a limited Edition product that it was most likely made not long before shipping & as is characteristic of perfume oils that the scent will morph & change with additional cure time,
Arcana Halloween 2010 Soaps
In order to give companies a fair, comprehensive review, I like to sample something from each product type they offer. As fragrance fiends know all too well, some artists make one or two products that are best of show but have others that fail miserably.
These soaps are made via the cold process method which can result in lightly scented products as a lot of essential oils don’t tolerate the method well but Julia once again displays her tremendous talent as both bars are strongly scented. Both soaps also smelled like the descriptions I’ve listed for the oils, more bonus points for Arcana here as having a scent that smells the same across the products lines it is offered in is very important. In the shower each soap lathered well and the scents bloomed making for most pleasurable bathing.Afterwards little scent was left on my skin but soap is meant to wash away clean, taking dirt, impurities with it so no demerits on that point. My skin felt clean but didn’t have that squeaky clean, oh my god get the body butter out stat feeling a lot of soap leaves.
Bonus Scent Review: Morphine Perfume Oil
The softening of hard remembrances and the inexorable embrace of warm oblivion. Cocoa absolute, vanilla oleoresin, sticky marshmallow syrup, a trickle of aged patchouli, and a delicate shot of smoked vetiver
Patchouli is a scent I’m careful with as my body chemistry tends to amp it in a most unpleasant way! Still I ordered a bottle because I was intrigued by the marriage of opposites coco and vanilla. This is yet another example of Arcana’s mastery, this scent blend isn’t an overly sweet candy shop type of perfume, it’s foody but then it’s not, the patchouli and smoked vetiver act in unison to govern and temper coco, vanilla & marshmallow bending them into submission to form a rich, unique deeply pleasing scent that is indeed as addictive as Morphine. Special note here, this is a very dark oil that will turn darker as it cures, when applying rub in well, as it can stain the skin a bit.
I am impressed with the scent blends and how well they fit their descriptions, the label art and product presentation lend a dark air of mystery to the products in a classy manner. The fragrance oils are unique, with excellent staying power. I’d be confident, proud to give Arcana products as a gift. The Arcana Halloween 2010 collection gets 5 stars from me, I cannot wait to place my next order!
FTC: I have no ongoing relationship with this company aside from that as a customer. I did not receive compensation or consideration in any form for this review, the products listed were purchased by me.
